Festive seasons like the Chinese New Year often inspire generosity. As families gather and traditions are renewed, many feel a stronger urge to give back, and many local charities often see a surge in donations during this time.  

But when the celebrations end and life returns to normal, the needs in our communities don’t disappear. In fact, the period after the holidays is often when consistent support matters most. When the spirit of festive giving continues beyond the season, it helps build steady and year-round support for those who need it most. That’s when the true impact of giving becomes clear.

The Limitations of Seasonal Giving

During festive periods, donations often arrive in large volumes over a short span of time. While well-intentioned, these may not always correspond to what beneficiaries need most at that moment. For instance, pre-packed hampers and bulk food donations are common, but there will be shortages of daily essentials.

At the same time, seasonal surges also put a strain on operational teams such as volunteers, as more people travel during the holidays. With fewer hands but higher volumes, distribution becomes harder.

The Need for Consistency

Once festive campaigns die down, beneficiaries’ daily realities remain. For families who rely on food support, needs do not follow a seasonal calendar -- they continue week after week.

Food from the Heart (FFTH) is built around this continuity. Our four distribution programmes provide support throughout the year, ensuring families receive help consistently, not just during festive periods.

A steady flow of essential food items allows us to provide the much needed support that families can depend on. While festive giving does help, the greatest impact is seen when there is a sustained network of food support, even after the celebrations end.

Fuelling the Future: How Your Donation is Strategically Used

A large share of cash donations goes towards purchasing the food we distrubute. This support is especially vital for fully funded programmes, such as the School Goodie Bag programme and the Community Food Pack programme, while our Community Shop helps us top up on essentials when donated food isn’t enough.

In-kind donations play a role too. Non-perishable food items are collected at our warehouse, while our Community Shop helps distribute a steady supply of essentials for benefiaries.

Sustaining Operations and Delivery

Donations also support operating costs, which make it possible for food to be sorted, stored, and delivered safely and efficiently. These processes ensure that food reaches beneficiaries in a timely manner, supporting our long-term commitment of sharing hope and nourishing lives.

Closing the Loop: Fighting Food Waste for the Environment

Beyond distribution, sustained food support also means managing surplus wisely. Reducing food waste is a core part of FFTH's mission, supporting both the environment and communities. Programmes like Market Place work with retailers to redistribute items that can't be sold but are still safe to eat, while Bread Run collects surplus bread from bakeries and hotels. Together, these efforts keep edible food out of the bin and put it to good use.
