Going to School Hungry: The Impact of Lack of Nutrition on Students at School

At Food from the Heart, we understand that a child's success in school is not only dependent on their academic abilities but also on their physical and emotional well-being. Unfortunately, many underprivileged students in Singapore do not have access to sufficient and nutritious food at home.

Typically, the foods that are more easily accessible and affordable are lacking in proper nutrients and high in saturated fats, sugars, and calories. While these types of foods may be quick and tasty, they actually have a damaging effect on students and their performance in school.

Lack of Energy and Concentration

One of the most apparent effects of malnutrition is a lack of energy and concentration. When a child does not receive enough food or nutrients, they may feel tired, lethargic, and have difficulty focusing in class. This can result in falling asleep in class, daydreaming, and a general lack of motivation to learn. As a result, these students may fall behind in their studies and struggle to keep up with their peers.

Lower Immune System

Poor nutrition can also lead to a weaker immune system, making children more susceptible to illnesses. When a child is frequently sick, they may miss school, which can result in falling behind in their studies. Additionally, when a child is sick, they may not have the energy or focus to learn effectively, further impacting their academic performance.

Loss of Confidence

Children who do not have access to sufficient food and nutrition may also experience a loss of confidence. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed about their situation, especially when they see their peers with access to more resources. This can cause a significant blow to their self-esteem and negatively impact their social and emotional well-being.

The School Goodie Bag Programme

At Food from the Heart, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background. That is why we created the School Goodie Bag programme, which provides underprivileged students with a consistent and reliable supply of nutritious food support. This programme not only helps to alleviate financial pressures on the family but also allows students to perform their best in school.

Hear first-hand from one of our ex-beneficiaries, Passion, as she shares her experience:

The impact of malnutrition on a child's academic performance and overall well-being is significant. By supporting the School Goodie Bag programme, you can help to ensure that underprivileged students in Singapore have access to sufficient and nutritious food. Your cash donations allow us to select healthier and more nutritional options for the students, making a lasting impact on their lives. Donate $60 today to provide for 1 student for a month, or consider donating more to help us continue our mission. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these children.
